Company description

Roboception offers innovative navigation, real-time perception and manipulation solutions for robotic systems. Customer-specific software products for a variety of hardware platforms are developed in compliance with the customer’s individual plug-and-produce requirements.

Roboception’s innovative sensor solutions enable customers across all robotic domains to generate real-time, time and location-dependent 3D data products and to equip robotic systems with robust and seamless infrastructure-free navigation. Following the concept of “Sense. Reason. Act.”, 3D technologies such as object localization, recognition and scene analysis, robotic manipulation and application development complete the portfolio.

The solutions include highly intuitive, user-friendly interfaces, parametrization and programming, hence a detailed robotic knowledge is not required for their setup and operation.

Munich-based Roboception GmbH was founded in March 2015 as a spin-off of the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The founders have substantial experience in the areas of stereo matching, data fusion and real-time 3D perception.

Automated kitting solution with 3D robot vision

Client name: Danfoss Drives

Process type: Handling & Picking

The issue at hand: In a kitting set-up, a robot compiles an assortment of different parts, picked directly from the supplier’s pallets, into differing trays. A robot-mounted 2D camera was used to identify the required parts, and to pick and place them.
However, as soon as the positioning of the parts would vary – e.g. if a palette was slightly tilted, its contents were even slightly shifted or a supplier maybe changed their way of packing the parts – the set-up would run into problems:
“We simply had far too much downtime and engineering effort in the original set-up, and the cycle time wasn’t great either,” Hansen recalls. “With Roboception’s vision solution, we were able to add a third dimension into our process, making it significantly more robust and more flexible at the same time.”

3D vision for robots cuts cycle times in half

Client name: Kautenburger GmbH

Process type: Packing & Palletizing

Among the customers of Kautenburger GmbH, Germany, is Refractarios Kelsen S.A. (Spain), a producer of refractory components and solutions that include fire clay bricks, fireproof bricks used for lining furnaces.
In the production process, these bricks are stacked onto wagons. Stacking the bricks onto the wagons robotically is not a great challenge in terms of automation. However, during the processing and transport the bricks will change their shape, and their positions may shift as well. This lack of milimetric presicion lead to downtimes and waste. Using Roboception’s rc_visard 160m, the rc_randomdot pattern projector and the rc_reason BoxPick module, Kautenburger has implemented a solution that eradicated these problems.

A vision system that REALLY works

Client name: QRS A/S

Process type: Handling & Picking

In the production line at Danfoss Drives, implemented by Danish integrator Quality Robot Systems (QRS), a total of six KUKA robots take over work steps that were previously performed manually. For this, the robotic cells must recognize and move up to 100 different components without manual intervention.
“The requirement was fully automatic feeding of the components – a task that can only be solved with a camera system, given the large number of variations. Feeding the blanks meticulously ordered and aligned was not economically feasible.
“Despite the major challenge of automatically recognizing more than 100 components, we were able to solve the task and provide our customer with the perfect solution.“ (Olav K. Sjørslev, Sales Manager at KUKA integration partner QRS)
