We are generally looking towards automation to reduce headcount and dependency on manual labor. At the airbag factory, several opportunities have been discovered and management has chosen to focus on metal detector handling as one of the first to automate. All sewed airbags are scanned through a metal detector to reveal any metal residues, as for example a broken needle from the sewing machine. The process is purely manual and 2 operators are full-time occupied with this repetitive task. There are 2 metal detectors each working in 3 shifts, 5 days a week. The airbags are put in standard trays and palletized in a standard pattern before transportation to the metal detectors. Today, they also have a minor portion (~10%) of the products that are packed in large tubs and not in trays. In the future, these will be processed manually or converted into trays.
